Featuring works by 24 artists who use their unique perspectives to portray pets in different ways, delicately outlined the emotional bond between pets and human. The Pet Show explores how humans often place animals on a pedestal and consider them from all perspectives: as life partners, status symbols, friends and family members, and as works of art.Pets, once marginalized, have increasingly become an indispensable part of humans' self-integrity and an integral role in contemporary society and pop culture.

Exploring the wonderful and profound emotional bond between pets and human through the lens of 24 artists!

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Hand against paw, skin against fur, mankind and her pet, an unbreakable bond. A relationship that begun more than 14,000 years ago, when humans first started to domesticate dogs. That is what defines a pet — that it is domesticated to some degree, and primarily kept as a companion to humans. With the rise of urbanization and prosperity, pets have increasingly appeared in our lives. A mutually beneficial and dynamic relationship that is considered crucial for the health and well-being of both parties. They are not only members of the family but also solace for our souls. They teach us empathy, help us learn to express love and take responsibility, and provide us with warm companionship in times of loneliness.

Fotografiska's curatorial team has cleverly selected a series of artworks focusing on pets, aiming to deepen the public's understanding of pets' indispensable role in daily life through an artistic perspective. Works on view will include animal photographer Gerrard Gethings' series Do You Look Like Your Pets, which reveals the incredible bond between pets and humans through fun comparisons; Tim Flach's works further explore the profound connections between animals, plants, humans, and nature, inspiring deep reflection from viewers; Sophie Gamand, known for her touching, sensitive photographs of dogs taking baths....

Through over 100 pieces of works in 6 different themed sections, the exhibition will allow the audience to re-examine the important role of pets in our lives while experiencing the artworks up close. Pets, as an indispensable part of many people's lives, accompany us through many important moments in unique ways. This exhibition is not just an artistic feast but also a discussion on the status and impact of pets in human culture.

As a popular pet photography art exhibition in Stockholm and New York over the past three years, The Pet Show now is landing at Fotografiska Shanghai, which will be the 4th stop of its world tour. It will be on view from December 7, 2024, through March 9, 2025. And it will undoubtedly bring a new artistic experience to local audiences and further promote the development of pet-themed artistic creation in China.
